Cursor Announces Origin, a Git-Based Code Management Platform to Replace GitHub

Cursor, an AI coding editor, has released Origin, a Git-based code hosting feature. Origin is directly embedded within the editor and aims to enable source code management—previously handled by external services such as GitHub—to be completed entirely within the Cursor application.

Code hosting refers to the mechanism of managing and sharing a program's source code on a server. GitHub has become the representative platform and is widely used by many development teams. Cursor, which has garnered attention as an editor where AI automatically generates and complements code, has now expanded into the code management space with Origin. The goal is to provide an environment where developers can handle both AI-assisted work and code management in a single interface without the friction of switching to external tools.

Origin is accessed via a newly created "Codebase" tab within the Cursor application. At present, it is being offered as an early beta version, with access limited to Pro, Teams, and Enterprise plans. Rollout to the free plan has not yet been announced.

Notable is Cursor's positioning of this feature as "agent-native." AI agents are AI systems that autonomously execute tasks based on human instructions, and in the coding domain, the trend of automatically writing and correcting code is spreading. Origin is designed with the operation of such AI agents in mind, reflecting an underlying philosophy of integrating code management itself into the AI's workflow.

In the development tools market, the boundary between editors and code management/CI (continuous integration) tools is becoming blurred, and Origin exemplifies this trend. GitHub is also strengthening its AI-powered coding support with Copilot, and as competition to unify code management and AI assistance intensifies, Cursor appears to be pursuing vertical integration starting from the editor.

Going forward, attention will focus on what features Origin expands during its beta period and how much it can adopt the development workflows of teams currently centered on GitHub. GitHub has evolved into a platform with broad functionality beyond mere code storage, encompassing code review, automated testing, and project management. While it may take time for Origin to match such capabilities, its direction of centralizing the development experience around AI is likely to advance industry-wide discussions.
